After a year of contemplation and deliberation, I have finally arrived in Vancouver, Canada. It was around a year ago I made the leap and applied for a working visa.

This was also around the time I was neck-deep in house hunting to purchase a unit in Brisbane. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. It was one of those decisions that didn’t really make sense at the time but as it begins to unfold I have come to the realisation there was a reason for that “spur of the moment” decision and that in fact, it is simply another path on the journey of my life.

In my last story, I wrote about how I was living my life based on what I thought I should be doingHow I was in this constant battle with myself based on the expectations society has taught us to believe is the right or responsible thing to do. When in fact there is no right thing to do. Life is a series of unfolding events and if we cling to what we believe we should do, it will inevitably lead to a life of misery and regret. Ok maybe that’s an exaggeration, a lot of people are very happy following the shoulds and feel accomplished with what they’ve achieved, but I personally felt quite miserable and had a nagging feeling that I’d live with deep regret if I didn’t take the plunge and at least try out this new path.

Since beginning the journey of selling all my furniture and my car, closing the door for the last time on my rental in Brisbane and packing my bags, I feel alive, more alive than I have felt in the past 3 years. Every corner I turn shows me something new, and meeting all these new people with different outlooks on life has made me feel inspired and intrigued at who I might meet along the journey. Every person I’ve crossed paths with in Canada so far has been the most welcoming experience, the weather is just a delight. The birds are chirping and the gardens in the area I’m staying are absolutely amazing. I have been here less than 1 week and I can’t wait to delve deeper and call this place home for a while.

I have a working visa which will allow me to work and live here for 2 years (love the easy relationship Australia has with Canada). I am staying at Airbnb accommodation for the initial few weeks and I begin my hunt for a van to call my home on wheels. My plan is to drive through BC in the summer and find a place to park or stay in winter to avoid navigating driving in the heavy snow. As a graphic designer, I have had the ability to work remotely and bring my clients with me, and continue working with my Australian clients on the road, whilst picking up Canadian clients when the work gets slow.

The best thing about this whole journey is the lack of a plan. I am taking it slow, listening to where my intuition directs me to go and the people of the area recommend me to go.

I will soak up the sun, swim in the rivers and lakes and get back to basics, learning what it is that I want out of life, not what I should do in life, and hopefully coming to the conclusion that whatever it is that I choose to do is never going to be the right choice. That every path has its reasons for revealing itself to me and to be content.

I am so grateful this journey appeared in my path when it did and I’m excited to continue onwards, exploring a new place and doing a bit of soul-searching in the process.
